1.Faculty

Graduate School of Human Sciences/ School of Human Sciences (the current position is affiliated to the Department of Advanced Human Sciences)

2.Position

Associate Professor (senior level or jun kyoju). Initial appointment of 3 years. Contract may be renewed for 2 years based on achievements.

3.Duties and Responsibilities

  (1) Promoting English-medium courses and programmes in the School and Graduate School of Human Sciences (course will be both subject and skills-based);
  (2) Teaching and research in the successful candidate’s specialist field as well as connected to item i) above; and
  (3) Administrative responsibilities usual to a faculty member in the School and Graduate School of Human Sciences including attending Faculty Senate meetings and serving on committee and working groups.

4.Expected Qualifications

  (1) An outstanding record in teaching and research in one area of the Human Sciences. Research outputs should include English-language publications. Please see our website to gain a clearer of view of the field of Human Sciences at Osaka University.

  (2) PhD in one area of the Human Sciences as defined above
  (3) Native-level or near-native level fluency in English.
  (4) Some basic ability to communicate in Japanese is desirable in order to fulfill administrative responsibilities.

5.Starting date

September 1, 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter, but no later than March 31, 2015.

6.Application materials

  (4) Hard copies of three representative publications (may include PhD thesis).
  (5) One academic recommendation.
  (6) A list of academic associations the applicant is currently a member of.
  (7) A statement of 800 words or less in English describing your teaching and research experience to date.
  (8) A statement of 800 words or less in English describing your current and future research aspirations.
  (9) Name, affiliation, title, and contact information of two academic referees who can be contacted (separate from the person who writes the recommendation listed above) to offer an opinion on your suitability for the position.
 (10) Certificate or transcript of highest degree. If a copy, you will be asked to show the original certificate or transcript at the interview or prior to the contract being signed.

7.Selection process

Following documentary screening, short-listed candidates will be interviewed either face-to face or via an IT interface in June. The interview process will involve teaching a mock class if face-to-face, or presenting the Selection Committee with a recording of a teaching session if by an internet interface. Additional materials, including letters of recommendation, may also be requested. Please note that we are unable to reimburse travel expenses.

8.Compensation

Salary and benefits will be determined on the basis of Rules Pertaining to Salary for National University Corporation Osaka University Limited Term Staff. The salary of an Associate Professor varies according to his/her age, qualifications and career history. For instance, the basic monthly salary of someone who has 10 years working experience at academic institutions after obtaining a PhD is about 400,000 yen, excluding taxes and allowances. Twice yearly bonuses are on top of this.
